North America has a diverse linguistic landscape. The languages of North America vary greatly in the number of speakers, the geographical spread, and the degree to which they are spoken as a first language. For example, French is spoken almost exclusively in Quebec, but also in parts of New Brunswick; Spanish is the most widely spoken language across all of North America; English is an official language in both Canada and the United States.
There are over 150 indigenous languages spoken in North America. Many of them, such as Cree, Inuktitut, and Ojibwe have many speakers. Others have only a few hundred speakers left. It’s important to maintain these languages so that their culture can be passed down from generation to generation.
